Land compensation for Mama Ngina University expansion pushed to next regime

Land compensation for Mama Ngina University expansion pushed to next regime

More
than 180 residents of Gatundu South Sub- County will have to wait longer to
receive compensation after State officials announced this week that funds have
not yet been provided. These people signed contracts to give up their land for
the expansion of the proposed Mama Ngina University in Gatundu, Kiambu County.

According
to the National Land Commission
(NLC),
it has not yet received funding from the Ministry of Education to execute
out the payments.

With
the financial year coming to an end, the compensation will now be given to the
incoming administration following the election on August 9.

“We
are still waiting to hear from the Ministry of Education.” NLC acting CEO
Kabale Arero told the Business Daily in an interview last week
.

The Mutomo village residents, President Uhuru
Kenyatta’s rural home, were expecting to receive at least Sh10 million apiece
for a 100x100ft plot (a quarter of an acre), as opposed to their goal of Sh16 million
in the current financial year, in order to make room for the expansion.

Ms. Taches had earlier stated that her office had
finished the verification process and was awaiting funding from the Ministry of
Education.

By the time we went to press, George Magoha, the
cabinet secretary for education, had not responded to Business Daily.

According to Ms. Tache, “The Commission requested
funds from the Ministry of Education and we are still waiting.”

The residents worried that the delay had complicated
their relocation plans because they had begun working with land sellers from
other locations but they are now unable to complete the transactions.

In 2018, Kenyatta University’s Mama Ngina University
College was established with permission from the Commission for University Education (CUE).

It bears the name of the former First Lady, who also
happens to be President Uhuru Kenyatta’s mother.

Mutomo, Ichaweri is a small village on Kenyatta Road
in Gatundu South that is home to two Kenyan presidents: the current President
Uhuru Kenyatta and his father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

Residents have between 15 and 30 days to vacate their
premises after receiving compensation.

After extensive negotiations to acquire the land in
mid-May, the NLC reached a long-term agreement with the Mutomo residents.

On July 16, 2021, Prof Magoha visited the site and
announced that the institution would admit its first 90 students in September.
