Uhuru to commission expanded Eastern Bypass as legacy project -KURA

President
Uhuru Kenyatta will soon commission the expanded Eastern bypass.

The road is
87% finished, according to the Kenya
Urban Roads Authority (KURA)
, and the President plans to commission it as
one of his legacy projects before he leaves office.

State House,
according to KURA Director General Silas Kinoti, has not specified a date for
the road’s commissioning.

“By end of
the month, the main carriageway will be open to traffic. The KURA Board
inspected the road on Wednesday and is satisfied with the work,” Kinoti said.

He continued
by saying that as more people moved to the residential areas around the Eastern
bypass, traffic on the extended route had increased.

“So far,
there is reduced travel time to and from Thika road and Mombasa road,” he said.

The Eastern
Bypass is 32 kilometres long generally.

The Nairobi
neighborhoods in the south-east and northeast are connected by a road that
forms a semicircle.

It enables
traffic from Mombasa heading toward the central of Kenya to avoid Downtown
Nairobi, easing congestion there.

China Communication Construction Company is
building the road for Sh12.5 billion.
